Vital Dental Care No One Should Be Without

Studies have shown that on average it’s a good idea to visit the dentist two times a year. This is true for most people. Some people can even get by with fewer visits with the dentist, because they have a history of excellent dental health. People who suffer from fewer cavities and are not susceptible to gum disease make an appointment with the dentist on rare occasions only.

On the other hand, people who are high risk patients, those who risk dental disease, need to visit every three or four months and sometimes more. Smokers, diabetics, and anyone with a weak immunity system, are higher risk patients when it comes to dental disease. These people are at risk of contracting a bacterial infection, and they are prone to cavities and the buildup of plaque.

We should all take good care of our teeth by watching what we eat. If you’re someone that smokes or drinks black tea and lots of red wine, be on the lookout for the discoloring of your teeth. The kinds of foods with a dark rich color are known for staining the teeth. After eating these kinds of foods, it’s a good idea to pick up your toothbrush and give your mouth a good cleaning. Another remedy is to eat something that has a cleansing effect like an apple, to rid your teeth of these staining elements.

Change your toothbrush every three months at least. A toothbrush has a limited life. Over time a toothbrush will build up the presence of bacteria and this can be harmful, because basically you’re transferring all those germs back into your mouth each day. Be sure to brush at 45 degree angles against the gum and brush your teeth in a circular motion rather than back-and-forth or straight up and down. Be sure to use a soft bristle and don’t scrub too hard or you can hurt your gums.

Brush your tongue with your toothbrush when you finish brushing your teeth or use a tongue scraper. Both are excellent for removing the bacteria that gives you bad breath.

Eat a lot of teeth-cleaning foods. Apples, carrots, celery, and even popcorn have this property. For best results eat these kinds of foods with your main meal. These foods also strengthen the teeth, because they contain vitamin C which is a vital nutrient that holds cells together. It also helps your gums fight off disease.

Finally, to reduce the odor in your mouth brought on by the buildup of bacteria, chew fresh herbs like mint, parsley and cilantro. Seeds, for example sesame seeds, help fend off plaque and help strengthen your tooth enamel.
